Nederland’s Sterling Ridge residents show patriotic pride

NEDERLAND — A group of residents in Nederland’s Sterling Ridge subdivision are breaking out the red, white and blue in hopes of starting an annual celebration.

Residents in the gated community are planning the Sterling Ridge Patriotic Parade set for 7 p.m. Sunday.

“Three of us got together and wanted to start a tradition,” local educator Traci Bieber said. “We had all these ideas for the Fourth of July that we’ve never had a chance to do in a classroom so we thought, what if we met at the park and do these activities.”

Bieber and son Luke along with fellow educator Kara Smith and her twin sons Koby and Cooper, gathered in Smith’s garage where the boys worked on decorating their bicycle and motorized child’s toys.

“I think it’s great and is going to bring out a lot of people,” Smith said of the upcoming patriotic parade. “We want to start a tradition that we hope grows every year.”

The Sterling Ridge community consists of about 100 homes and many of the residents have said they will participate, Bieber said. Some, she added, are coming in from vacation to take part in the celebration.

The parade will consist of walkers, bikes, trikes, strollers, wagons, golf carts, a rider on a Harley Davidson motorcycle and a lady dressed as Lady Liberty and the residents are encouraged to decorate their yards with a patriotic theme.

Bieber, Smith and another educator already use their time off from teaching to hold mini events every Wednesday for youth in the subdivision called Ridge Kids. So far they have had science experiments, baking demonstrations and painting events.
