City officials in Nederland and a county commissioner will take a pie to the face for a good cause on Saturday.

The pie in the face fun is part of a benefit for Mike Lovelady, a retired fire chief who served the City of Nederland for 30 years and his wife, Wanda Lovelady, a longtime employee with the city.

Friends and family of the Lovelady’s will host a benefit for the couple from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Heritage Festival pavilion.

Mike Lovelady underwent major exploratory surgery in June due to a blocked bowel. A subsequent emergency surgery was performed 10 days later due to complications which included a stay in the intensive care unit of a hospital. During that time his body developed a fistula and Lovelady has not been able to eat food by mouth since June 20. He faces more surgeries and possibly a bowel resection in the future as his body heals.

His wife Wanda has been employed with the City of Nederland for almost 19 years and she is overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the community.

“Everybody who works for the city has been so good to us. We can’t believe they are doing this for us,” Wanda Lovelady said. “People in public works have come and mowed our grass during the summer while we were at the hospital and I was going every evening to Houston to be with him.”

Angela Fanette, Nederland parks and recreation director, called the Lovelady’s a wonderful couple who would give the shirt off their back if needed.

“I want them to feel loved and supported as they’re dealing with this because it’s expensive when someone is hospitalized,” Fanette said. “I’ve been involved in some pretty cool events but something like this is very humbling, to see the outpouring of love from the community.”

The benefit includes Moon Bounces, games, raffle items, gumbo, a bake sale, T-shirts and more. Raffle items include fire puts, fireworks displays, gift certificates from businesses such as Finch Hutton, La Suprema and Fuzzy’s, hand carved wooden crosses, etc.

Tickets for the gumbo and raffle are available the day of the event and at from City Clerk Gay Ferguson.

“We are trying to get everybody out to have some gumbo, food and fun,” Fanette said.

Wanda Lovelady said she and Mike are in good spirits at this time.

“We are trusting God for all of this,” Lovelady said. “Mike is not one to sit around the house, he likes to be out and doing something. He’d rather be working then staying around the house. We know God is in control over everything and when the time is right, he’ll have his surgery with no complications.”
