NHS student wins new car for attendance

NEDERLAND — Attending school has a special meaning for students at Nederland High School, just ask Richard Gonzales Jr.

On Wednesday, the freshman Gonzales won a brand new Scion courtesy of Philpott Motors as well as a $500 gas card from Excel Insurance. Gonzales’ friends Jacob Kendrick and Chad Foreman offered him support during the presentation.

All Nederland High School students were eligible for the grand prize so long as they met the criteria, which required them to have no more than 3 absences throughout the year.

NHS Principal Steven Beagle is proud of the partnership between Philpott and the Nederland Independent School District.”

“This is a tremendous initiative that started over 12 years ago,” Beagle said adding that this has been an asset and tool to encourage students to attend school.

Attendance at the high school is in the 96 percent range and Beagle believes the incentive of winning a new car is a main reason, he said.

Bob Thewman, of Philpott Motors, was master of ceremonies and once again led students on a laughter and applause filled game where seniors, juniors and sophomores were eliminated before announcing the winner.

“This is one of the things we absolutely look forward to,” Thewman said of the car give away.

NHS drama students kicked off the program with a video featuring the song “Don’t Stop Attending” to the tune of the song “Don’t Stop Believing.”
