NPD officer recovering after shooting himself in foot

— An 18-year veteran of the Nederland Police Department is home recovering following an incident where he shot himself in the foot.

Officer David Odom, a long-time employee with NPD, was off duty at Delta Downs in Vinton, La. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, when his gun fell out of his pants. The weapon discharged while he was picking it up, shooting him in the right foot, according to Assistant Chief Gary Porter of the Nederland PD.

The officer is currently out on sick leave and it will be determined if an internal investigation is needed once more information is gathered from the Calcasieu Sheriff’s Office.
