Larry the Cable Guy takes another shot at movie stardom with the moronic comedy, “Delta Farce.” Predictably, stupid is as stupid does, and the star of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour has another unfunny flop on his hands.
Larry teams up with fellow comedian Bill Engvall and the human oddball DJ Qualls to play a trio of Army Reserve idiots who are ordered to report for duty in Iraq, but end up being dropped off in Mexico instead. Don’t ask why a plane headed to the Middle East would be crossing over Mexico because “Delta Farce” isn’t interested in anybody who knows anything about geography. This is a movie that’s only interested in entertaining on an idiotic level.
Our trios of hero-idiots see the sand and the Mexicans and assume that they’re in Iraq because Mexicans and Iraqis both have mustaches. American bravado quickly takes over where mental competence leaves off, which brings our heroes into direct conflict with the local jefe (Danny Trejo). The guys bumble their way through the conflict, which leads to the occasional pratfall or stupid joke, none of them even coming close to being funny. I can honestly say that I didn’t laugh once during “Delta Farce.” I don’t think that I even cracked a smile; instead, I sat there rolling my eyes and praying for the film to end.
Perhaps it’s understandable — I’ve always been a Ron White kind of guy. Embracing your Redneck roots can be funny, but only if there’s certain flair to the presentation. Larry the Cable Guy attacks all of his projects like a bull in a china shop. I guess that his die-hard fans will be occasionally amused, but it would certainly be nice to see the Blue Collar guys making an attempt at comedy that’s more than just playing to obvious stereotypes.
