Early morning fire destroys Nederland home

NEDERLAND — An early morning fire left a Nederland home in ruins on Tuesday.

The home, located in the 2500 block of Avenue H, had been vacant for some time and utilities were not connected, Nederland Fire Chief Gary Collins said.

The fire was reported at approximately 3 a.m. June 24  and firefighters from Nederland received assistance from Groves, Port Neches and Port Arthur firefighters.

“The house is a total loss,” Collins said.

A vehicle stored in the back of the garage was totally destroyed as well. Collins believes the vehicle may not have been operational.

The intense fire also caused slight damage to some out buildings of some neighbors and some fences received heat damage, he added.

Nederland Police Chief Darrell Bush said the department had received complaints about the house.

“We’ve had some issues with vagrants from time to time,” Bush said.

As a precaution, a cadaver dog was brought in to check for human remains but none were found, Collins said.

Firefighters were on scene until 10 a.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
