Cold weather arrives for holiday season

— After weeks of what many have called “spring weather,” Southeast Texas will experience a burst of winter when temperatures fall to the mid-to-low 30s early Tuesday morning.

Andy Tingler, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Lake Charles, said that the temperatures will be lowest in Jefferson and Orange counties at about 2 a.m. Tuesday, with the coldest drop being in the Bevil Oaks area at 32 degrees.

“The wind’s going to hold up so there won’t be a hard frost,” Tingler said. “It’s going to feel like the upper 20s in the morning.”

With strong winds blowing at five to eight miles per hour, it is going to feel colder than it really is, he said.

Cold, dry weather will continue through Wednesday with the winds calming down by Thursday morning.

Beaumont and parts of Lumberton can expect a light frost on their windshields, but not Port Arthur, Tingler said.

“Especially down by Sabine Pass, it can range 20 degrees warmer than the north side of the county,” he said. “It’s still going to be cold there, though - in the 40s and 50s.”

Light spring weather may return Friday, he said, and thunderstorms and showers return to the forecast by the weekend.
