“For years, the Benefit for Children Golf Classic has been giving back to the community, and we’re excited to be able to do so again this year,” said Barbara Phillips, Manager of Public Affairs of the Valero Port Arthur Refinery. “The needs of the children continue to be an important part of Valero’s community involvement and we are proud to support the children of our area.”
Valero Port Arthur Refinery employees joined charity representatives in celebrating each agency’s success, and the success of the Valero Texas Open’s charity outreach efforts. This year nationwide, Valero will distribute $9 million to children’s charities in the areas where it does business. .Agencies selected to receive Benefit for Children dollars each year are recommended by Valero employees themselves.
The checks presented today, ranging in amounts from $2,500 to $25,000, will help agencies dedicated to enhancing children’s lives by providing a variety of services and programs such as scholarships for children with illnesses and disabilities to attend camp, new education and recreational programs for at-risk youths, and resources for abused and neglected children.
In the Port Arthur and surrounding area, a total of twenty-five children’s charities are receiving grants totaling $500,000, representing the Port Arthur area’s share of the $9 million total. The remaining funds will be distributed to children’s charities throughout the areas where Valero does business.
Dedicated to improving children’s lives, other local community agencies that also will be receiving donations are:
• CHRISTUS Health Foundation - Children’s Miracle Network
• Hughen Center
• Shorkey Education and Rehabilitation Center
• Muscular Dystrophy Association
• Garth House, Mickey Mehaffy Children’s Advocacy Program
Valero is proud to foster a network of financial support for agencies that exist to serve our nation’s children. “We could not do this without the generosity of Valero’s many business partners and sponsors,” Phillips said. “This is a true partnership among Valero employees, our sponsors and the PGA TOUR, which makes this tournament so successful.”
Thanks to the generosity of Valero’s business partners and sponsors, the Valero Texas Open remains one of the top charitable tournaments on the PGA TOUR.
Through its history, the Texas Open has raised $76 million for charities - $71.5 million of that has been raised since 2002, when Valero became the tournament’s title sponsor.
