BC grad dies after shooting in Orange

ORANGE — James Whitehead, a 2000 Bridge City High School graduate, died from the injuries received in a shooting at O’Reilly Auto Parts late Monday afternoon.

According to Chief Sam Kittrell of the Orange Police Department, an off-duty police officer shot a man following the report of a disturbance at O’Reilly Auto Parts in the 2900 block of North 16th Street in Orange.

Kittrell said the investigation is being handled not only by the Orange Police Department, but also by the Homicide Investigation Team which includes representatives from every law enforcement agency in Orange County.

“We’re still collecting the data right now,” Kittrell said.

Kittrell said there are reportedly several witnesses to the incident, but investigators are still unsure how many were present and who saw what. He also stated the Texas Rangers were being called in to assist in the investigation.

According to people at the scene, a man was reportedly attempting to return an automobile part to the store and an argument began between the unidentified man and store personnel.

An off-duty officer was reportedly in the store at the time of the disturbance and asked the man to leave. Both the officer and man went outside, where the argument continued.

A cordon was placed around the auto parts store, and a pick-up truck in front of the business was sequestered as well.

Kittrell did not elaborate on the extent of the person’s injuries or what agency the off-duty officer represents.

The Homicide Investigation Team is utilized in an event involving serious bodily injury.
