Seniors send holiday cheer to soldiers

PORT ARTHUR — A group of patriotic senior citizens want to make sure military personnel receive holiday wishes this season.

Crystal Young, nurse liaison at Senior Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center, learned through Facebook of a project to send Christmas card greetings to military personnel and felt it would be a good project for the residents.

“We are trying to do more community projects and saw this,” Young said. “The troops need to know they are not forgotten and people appreciate everything they are doing for our country.”

Jimmy Franklin, president of the center’s resident council, is proud to be part of the holiday card drive.

“This is a way to honor our veterans, those past and those who serve today,” Franklin said. “Because of the service they’ve done and are doing in the U.S. and around the world. They are working to keep us free and independent, through trials and tribulations they go through every day. This is a simple gesture, to put a smile on their faces.”

Jimmie Thibodeaux, 89,  is equally happy to send the cards, she said.

Franklin, 65, is pleased to bring joy to servicemen and women by sending Christmas cards.

“We’ve done this from our hearts and appreciate their service,” he said.

The cards will be mailed out in time to be distributed to military personnel, Young said.
