Salvation Army’s kettle Campaign to kick-off

PORT ARTHUR — Christmas is around the corner and soon shoppers will hear the familiar ring-ring-ring of the bell associated with the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign.

Salvation Army Maj. John Fuller said the bell ringing will kick-off Nov. 25 and run through Dec. 24 excluding Thanksgiving Day and Sundays.

“We’re trying to collect $60,000 to $70,000,” Fuller said.

The money goes back into the operating budget and is used to help those in need with rent and utilities as well as purchasing food from the Southeast Texas Food Bank which is also distributed to help feed the community, he said.

This year there will be 13 locations with 16 kettle stands — some locations have more than one entry door. The locations include: all four Market Basket locations in Mid-and South Jefferson County, Big Lot’s in Groves, four Walgreens and two Walmarts.

Interested persons can also go online to make a donation, he added.

The Salvation Army is taking applcaitons for bell ringers with orientation to be held on Friday.

Volunteers are also sought to ring the bell for donations.

“Churches, civic and social groups and volunteers can take part,” he said. “Sometimes families come in and volunteer as well.”

Fuller said they also have quite a few volunteers who are senior citizens who are looking for something to do.

Volunteers are also sought to assist with the upcoming toy drive.

Secure donations can be made online at www.salvationarmytexas.org  or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY.
