Swindell named PN Small Business Person of Year

PORT NECHES — Brian Swindell has come a long way in the past seven years.

Swindell, owner of Troop Industrial, started out his business in February 2006 with one employee. Today he has 20 employees, six of whom are veterans like Swindell himself and he has two locations.

His work has not gone unnoticed — he was recently named the 2013 Port Neches Small Businessperson of the Year.

Debbie Plaia, executive director for the Port Neches Chamber of Commerce, said Troop Industrial is growing by leaps and bounds.

“Brian is a prime example of how small businesses can thrive and continue to grow in a small community,” Plaia said.

Troop Industrial is a supplier of industrial fasteners such as nuts and bolts and safety equipment in addition to offering various tools and hardware.

One of the biggest obstacles for Swindell was changing the name of the business from Texas Nuts and Bolts; an issue that occurred July 2012 in order to allow him to participate in projects outside Texas.

The current name, with a logo featuring a patriotic theme, is a nod to Swindell’s time spent in the military. A proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in the Gulf War and spent time in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, Swindell spoke of Marine Sgt. Troop. Troop, a platoon leader, was not the type of person to let obstacles get in his way. When his Marines needed cots, Troop procured some and when they needed other important items, he procured them as well.

“He was real resourceful,” Swindell said, adding that the business isn’t named after the sergeant specifically. “His resourcefulness  in finding these things. That’s the spirit I want for my business — the spirit of we can make it happen.”

More than a quarter of Swindell’s employees are veterans, he added.

“I try to hire military guys,” he said. “They share the same mission to serve.”

Troop Industrial is located at 1022 Magnolia Ave. in Port Neches with a second location in Pasadena.
