Director seeks imaginative, spirited boys for PN film

PORT NECHES — A Texas based award winning director is seeking imaginative, spirited boys for the upcoming feature film Hellion which will be filmed in Port Neches.

The casting call will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 6 at Port Neches-Groves High School, 1401 Merriman in Port Neches.

The film is looking for imaginative and spirited boys, ages eight to 16. The boys will be considered for important roles in the upcoming film. No experience necessary, according to a press release.

The casting call will be conducted by Vicky Boone Casting, the casting director for such films as The Tree of Life, Scenes From the Suburbs, and The Girl.

The director is Kat Candler, whose credits include Sundance Film Festival selections Hellion and Black Metal.

Austin based producer and Port Neches-Groves High School graduate Kelly Williams and Candler visited Port Neches City Council on March 21 to inform council of their desire to film a majority of the movie in the city.

The film, which is to be based on a six-minute film Hellion and screened at SXSW Film Fest, will tentatively be shot in July.

“A crew member thought that this world (Hellion) was in Port Neches,” Candler said during the meeting, adding that she then learned Williams was a native of the city. “We came to visit and loved it. It inspired us to take a six minute short film to a 90 minute movie.”

Williams explained during the meeting that the film is a “father/son” story that occurs less than a year after the death of the child’s mother. One child pulls inward emotionally and the other acts out.

Persons with questions regarding the casting call or who want to send photos in advance can do so by e-mailing No appointment is necessary and the boys will be seen in the order they arrive.
