PA soldier funeral services announced

PORT ARTHUR — A Port Arthur soldier who died last week from a non-combat injury  while serving in Afghanistan is expected to be laid to rest Saturday with a service befitting one who gave all to his country.

Spc. Anthony R. Maddox, 22, of Port Arthur died July 22 in Landstuhl, Germany from burns sustained in a non-combat situation while on active duty in Andar, Afghanistan.

Maddox’s body is expected to arrive at Jack Brooks Regional Airport Thursday or Friday, Deputy Rod Carroll, spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, said.

Though the time is tentative, depending on the military’s schedule, Carroll is asking residents and businesses along the parade route to show their respect by displaying the American Flag in Sgt. Maddox’s honor.

Upon arrival, Maddox’s body will be escorted to the Gabriel Funeral Home.

“If anything positive has come from this war, it is that people have learned to respect the military once again, and the service they give to their  country,” Carroll said.

Talk to just about any Vietnam Vet, and they will tell you they were not respected; they did not get any kind of welcome when they came home, Carroll said.

“What we want to do is show respect to the family of Anthony Maddox, who gave all,” Carroll said.

The route is as follows:

• Leave Jack Brooks Regional Airport

• Left on northbound U.S. 69 Service Road

• Right on Spurlock

• Right on 18th St., (pass in front of Nederland High School.)

• Right on Helena

• Left on Nederland Ave.

• Right on Twin City Hwy.

Funeral services are tentatively scheduled 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at Antioch Baptist Church, 3920 West Cardinal Dr., Beaumont.
