An 81-year-old Nederland man is recovering at a Houston hospital after he was beaten and robbed in his garage on Friday.
The victim told police he had been away from his home in the 700 block of South First Street for the morning and upon returning he had pulled in to his garage at about 10:15 a.m., Friday May 9. As he got out of his vehicle he was approached by a man who beat him and robbed him of an undetermined amount of money, according to a press release from Nederland Police Chief Darrell Bush.
The victim was transported to The Medical Center of Southeast Texas then transferred to Memorial Houston Hospital for surgery. Assistant Police Chief Gary Porter said the man suffered serious injuries to his facial bones but is expected to recover.
The suspect is described as a large black male in his 20’s. At the time of the robbery he was wearing a black beanie style cap, a gray long sleeved shirt and black pants. He was driving a dark colored, possibly black, Jeep Cherokee.
Porter advises anyone who sees suspicious activity to call the police.
“I advise everyone, especially the elderly, to be aware of your surroundings and if something looks suspicious, call the police. Don’t wait,” Porter said. “Some people will see something suspicious and call the next day. You need to call right then. If you believe you have been followed from the grocery store or pharmacy or ATM, take not and call the police. If it turns out to be nothing, that’s OK. That’s what we’re here for.”
Anyone with information about this robbery is asked to contact the Nederland Police Department at 722-4965.
