NISD health fair a good start to new school year

NEDERLAND — Officials with Nederland ISD know that getting prepared for a new school year can be daunting.

In order to make the change from summertime to school time a bit easier the district hosted its eighth annual health fair on Monday at Nederland High School.

Crowds were heavy from 9 to 10 a.m., Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Stuart Kieschnick said. He estimated upwards of 200 people took advantage of the one-stop back-to-school event.

Mary DeGarmo brought along two grandchildren; Skylar DeGarmo who will be entering sixth grade and Serena DeGarmo, who will enter kindergarten.

“I think this is great,” Mary DeGarmo said. I wish we had gotten here earlier.”

The grandmother had praises for the assistance offered, from the free haircuts to school supply and school clothes assistance, adding that “all of it helps.”

By 11:20 a.m. most of the crowd has dispersed except for a number of people receiving a haircut including Skylar DeGarmo. The soon-to-be sixth grader conversed with Stacy Hicks and Julia Rodriguez, cosmetology students from Lamar State College-Port Arthur who were on hand to help.

Amanda Smith, cosmetology instructor, was pleased with the event saying they had provided about 30 haircuts.

“This is our fifth time coming,” Smith said. “We love to do community service and look at this as giving back to the community as well as benefiting our students.”

Besides proving the community service, the students also received a confidence booster, Smith said.

The NISD Health Fair was started eight years ago by former superintendent Gail Krohn. After her retirement Kieschnick took over the event.

“This is a way to get kids ready for the first day of school so they can start off the new school year with success,” Kieschnick said.

The event featured immunizations, vision and hearing screening, dental information, free/reduced meal applications, bus information and more.
