— The deadline for registration for two upcoming pageants is drawing near.

Applications for the Annual Texas Pecan Festival’s Queen’s Scholarship Pageant must be returned with registration fees by 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, to the Groves Chamber of Commerce office, 4399 Main Ave., in Groves. No late applications will be accepted.

Debbie Snell, administrative assistant with the chamber, said registration, which began six weeks ago on May 1, has went well this year. While there is no tally at this point to the number of entries she said typically 65 to 75 females take part each year.

“Stayin’ Alive for 45” is the theme for this year’s festival to be held Sept. 19 through Sept. 22. The pageant will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Port Neches-Groves High School auditorium.

And while the scholarship pageant is still months away there is still much to do between now and then such as photo sessions, orientation and more.

Completed applications will be accepted on a first come first serve basis. Each category will be limited to 15 contestants. Once the category is filled no more applications will be accepted. A new category has been added this year and categories go by grade. The categories are Petite Miss, 3yrs.- PK; Little Miss, K - 1st grade; Duchess, 2nd - 3rd grade; Countess, 4th- 5th grade; Junior Miss, 6th- 7th grade; Princess, 8th – 9th grade; Queen, 10th – 12th grade.

CavOILcade Inc. is accepting nominations for princesses and duchesses.

Betty Legnon, assistant director, said organizers are very excited about the response this year.

“The response has been very exciting and we are always open for more princesses and out-of-town duchesses,” Legnon said.

A princess must be a high school senior as of August 1, 2013, and must reside in Port Arthur, Port Neches, Nederland, Groves or Sabine Pass.  She must be sponsored by a civic organization or a business.

A duchess must also be a high school senior as of August 1, 2013, but she must reside outside the area. Duchesses can be sponsored by parents, grandparents business or civic organization.

The 61st celebration of the oil and petrochemical industry will begin in August with Orientation and will conclude October 12 with the parade and Queen’s Tea.  The Queen’s Scholarship Coronation will be held Saturday, October 5, when more than $6,000 in scholarships is awarded to the Queen, her court and two escorts.
