Arisco will not run for reelection

GROVES — Dr. Joseph P. Arisco, who has served on Groves City Council since 1996, has announced he will not run for reelection.

Arisco made the announcement during Monday’s City Council meeting after he lightheartedly told the city secretary there would “be an election this year.” His joke was aimed at the fact that sometimes in the past the incumbents ran unopposed.

Arisco told council and the audience he feels this is the right time to step down.

The City of Groves has called for a general election to be held on Nov. 5 for the purpose of electing a Ward 1 councilmember and a Ward 3 councilmember. The seats are held by Ward 1 incumbent Dr. Joseph P. Arisco and Ward 3 incumbent Sidney Badon.

The term is for two years.

“It has been an enjoyable experience,” Arisco said via phone following the meeting “I’ve been through a lot with the city but remember I’m only one of five on council. Anything accomplished is not by one person but the whole council doing it.”

In other business, council set a date of Aug. 12 for a joint public hearing in regard to the request for a specific use permit for the construction of a telecommunication tower at 5010 McKinley.

The area in question is behind the Mid-County Animal Shelter and surrounded  by commercial property.

Council also approved a replat of a half acre of land on Texas 87 at Main Avenue for the purpose of constructing a convenience store.
