NEDC director Rantala resigns

NEDERLAND — Mark Rantala, executive director of the Nederland Economic Development Corporation is set to resign his post next week.

Rantala, who served NEDC for 16 months, has accepted a similar position in a county with a population of about 250,000, he said via phone Friday.

“I hate to leave, I’ve enjoyed my time here,” Rantala said. “I had a great board to work with and wonderful people and I think we made a lot of progress.”

Larry Ducharme, NEDC board president, called Rantala a tremendous asset to the NEDC.

“He has provided us with organization and a solid foundation for us to build on,” Ducharme said. “I truly appreciate the time he spent with the Nederland EDC and I wish him well and success in his future endeavors.”

Rantala will attend his last meeting as executive director at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the NEDC office, 1903 Atlanta Ave., Nederland. The board is set to discuss the executive director’s position during the closed session and later consider a resolution authorizing Ducharme to approve any documentation previously approved by Rantala in the event of Rantala’s absence.

A number of projects occurred during Rantala’s tenure including the implementation of an updated website and a Facebook page, numerous incentives, a cost sharing venture to lure a major airline to the area and acting as liaison on matters relating to commercial real estate development at the Jack Brooks Regional Airport.
