PORT ARTHUR —
Standing in front of a smiling yellow octopus painted on the wall of the newly renovated Christus Hospital - St. Mary Valero Pediatric Unit Tuesday, hospital staff, city and county leaders and representatives from the local refinery celebrated the grand opening of the kid-friendly center.
The renovation combines the latest in medical technology with the local industry’s desire to fullfill a commitment to the community, and usher in a brand new era of children’s health care.
“This has been a long time coming,” Wayne Moore, hospital administrator, said. “Today we will bid farewell to the pediatric unit that was extremely old and tired.”
Renovations totaling $600,000 were made possible by numerous benefactors, mainly Valero Port Arthur Refinery, which gifted the hospital with $500,000.
“We are privileged to give back to the community,” Greg Gentry, vice-president and general manager of the Port Arthur Valero facility, said.
