Saturdays for locals only at PN spray park

PORT NECHES — When Port Neches first opened its riverfront spray park in 2008, few could have guessed just how popular the kid-friendly watering hole would become.

So much so, that the city has elected to implement rules to allow city residents private time to play among the treasure-themed water park.

Now in its second month, word of a new policy to restrict Saturday access to only Port Neches residents, has not reached all.

“There have been people who have come to the park and had to be advised of the Council’s policy,” City Manager Andre Weimer said.

The policy, enforced for the first time this year, sets aside Saturdays in the months of June, July and August strictly for the use of Port Neches residents.

That’s only 12-13 days out of the operating season, from March to October, Weimer said.

“I think that when the splash park was built, City Council felt it would be an amenity to the park and would be a benefit to the Port Neches residents as well as the area,” Weimer said. “It certainly appears to have been very popular for the entire area.

Data collected through June 29, the fifth Saturday this season, indicates 728 Port Neches residents were allowed access to the spray park on the designated Saturdays, while 766 non-Port Neches residents were denied access.

Weimer said he hopes word spreads that all other days any non-Port Neches resident is welcome, just not on the designated Saturdays.

Any Port Neches resident can have access as long as they provide a valid drivers license with a Port Neches address and a utility bill.
