Supporters brave rain to benefit PN man

PORT NECHES — Rain didn’t dampen the spirits of friends and family of Joshua Cendejas as they came out to support the Port Neches man.

Cendejas, 27, was injured in a July 22 diving accident that left him an “incomplete quadriplegic.” He has been in and out of hospitals and rehabilitation facilities since the accident and is currently at The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research in Houston.

His grandmother, Debbie Dietrich and spiritual family at United Christian Fellowship Church held at the benefit at the church.

“It is unbelievable, the amount of support he’s had from his church family and family members and friends,” Dietrich said.

Senior pastor John Morgan walked through the church facility speaking with Dietrich and supporters and checking on the benefit.

“We are trying to do what the Bible said to do,” Morgan said of the fundraiser for Cendejas. “We are trying to raise money to help his family and al proceeds, every dime, will go to help them.”

While Cendejas wasn’t able to attend the benefit in person, he was there via Skype. A laptop had been set up in the church and ever so often a young adult would stop to ask Morgan if they had missed Josh’s Skype.

Jeff Dietrich, who is Cendejas’ uncle, and Roland Courville grew up with Cendejas and called him a “good guy.”

“No one ever had anything bad to say about Josh,” Jeff Dietrich said.

Debbie Dietrich, who raised Cendejas since he was very young, sorted a special shirt on Saturday with the words “Fight. Supporting my cause. Spinal cord injury awareness” on the front and “Team Josh. Where there’s a will, there’s a way” on the back.

T-shirts benefiting Cendejas can be purchased for $20 by calling 963-0402.
