Election filing deadline approaches

The deadline for filing for a seat on local city council and school boards is quickly approaching.

Filers have until Aug. 26 to add their name to the ballot for the Nov. 5 election. So far there have been filing in the Groves and Port Neches city council races as well as Port Neches-Groves ISD.

The City of Groves has called for a general election for the purpose of electing a Ward 1 councilmember and a Ward 3 councilmember. The Ward 1 incumbent, Dr. Joseph Arisco, has announced he will not run for reelection. One person has filed for the position, James Rasa.

Ward 3 incumbent Sidney Badon has filed for re-election and as of Friday afternoon, has no opponent.

The term is for two years.

Applications can be picked up at Groves City Hall, 3947 Lincoln Ave. There is a $25 filing fee.

In Port Neches, seats held by Place 1  Councilmember Terry Schwertner and Place 3 Councilmember Roy Hollier are up for grabs.

Schwertner will not run for re-election but two residents have thrown their hat into the ring for the Place 1 seat; Kimberly Hall, a business owner and Christopher McMahon, chief operations officer at The Medical Center of Southeast Texas.

Place 3 incumbent Roy Hollier, a retired electrician, has filed for reelection and will face opponent Adam Anders, a sales representative. In lieu of a the $100 application fee Anders filed a petition to place his name on the ballot and collected 31 signatures from registered voters, which is six above the required number.

Councilmembers in Port Neches serve staggered three-year terms and all elected officials are voted at-large. Anyone wishing to file for candidacy must pick up an application at the Port Neches City Hall, 1005 Merriman St., by Aug. 26.

In the PN-GISD school board race only the incumbents have filed for reelection, Place 4 Trustee Melanie Miller and Place 5 Trustee Rodney Balsamo.

Potential candidates must pick up an application at the PN-GISD administration building, 620 Ave. C, Port Neches.
