Body found in canal identified

NEDERLAND — Information gathered during a late night traffic stop may have unlocked the story behind the death of Sean Steiner, the man whose body was found Monday morning in a Port Arthur canal.

Groves police officers Rudy Guerrera and Blaine Hollier pulled over a Groves man for a headlight violation at 3:48 a.m. Thursday in Groves.

The officers gave the man a full sobriety test, which showed he was not intoxicated, and inspected the outside of the vehicle finding damage beyond the broken headlight, according to Groves City Marshal Jeff Wilmore.

“By the other damage they felt that he had hit something that had rolled up on to the vehicle,” said Wilmore.

Four days later, the Port Arthur Police Department found the body of 43-year-old Steiner in the water near the intersection of Texas 73 and Texas 69 in Port Arthur, and both agencies now believe their is a connection between the two incidents.

“It just goes to show how important it is that we investigate and follow up on everything we work,” said Groves City Marshal Jeff Wilmore. “Sometimes it is the smallest things that we do that lead to the biggest discoveries in major investigations.”

The Port Arthur Police Department identified Steiner, a resident of Port Neches, through tattoos that matched a description given by his family, whom was in the process of filing a missing persons report when the identification was made.

Evidence found near the canal is believed to connect the two stories.

“Car parts left at the scene have led us to believe that the incident was connected to another incident that occurred the same night in Groves,” said Sergeant Scott Gaspard of PAPD.

Police also found Steiner’s abandoned car in Port Arthur leading them to believe he may have been walking home along Texas 73 to Port Neches the night he was killed.

The Groves man is cooperating with police, according to Gaspard.

PAPD is awaiting forensic evaluations for a final conclusion.
