The Port Arthur News

PORT ARTHUR — The Port Arthur Police Department arrested a man for deadly conduct Sunday after he fired multiple shots at officers from inside a vacant building.

Police officers arrived at 1647 7th Street at around 11 p.m. Sunday, responding to a suspicious person call, according to a PAPD press release. The location was a business that has been closed for some time.

As officers checked the back of the building, the man fired shots at them through the door, nearly hitting the two officers, according to the press release. Unharmed, both officers found cover and requested backup. They tried to communicate with the man in the building while they waited, but he did not respond.

Officers called in the SWAT team after failing to make contact with the man. But as the SWAT team approached, the man exited the building and surrendered to the officers. The officers canceled the SWAT team and arrested the man for deadly conduct.

The offcers determined the man had been staying in the abandoned building, according to the press release. No one was injured.
