DA Tom Maness announces retirement at end of year

BEAUMONT — Jefferson County Criminal District Attorney, Tom Maness, announces that he will not run for an eighth term and will officially resign at the end of this year.  Maness began his career in county government forty-two years ago, serving seven years as Chief Felony Prosecutor, eight years as Judge of the County Court at Law, and twenty-seven years as District Attorney.  One of the longest serving Elected Officials in Texas, Maness says it’s time to retire from public office.

“It has been a great ride.  I wouldn’t change anything if I had to do it over again.  I came to work in the District Attorney’s office in 1971.  Planning to spend a few years before a career in private practice, forty-two years later I’m still here.  I have the most talented law office in the State of Texas.  They know the law and have the strength and fortitude to seek what is right and just.  They will continue to provide outstanding service and dedication to the people of Jefferson County.”

“I was born and raised here, raised my family here, and hope that my grandchildren can grow up and live in the community where they have roots and opportunity.  Most of us in public office devote our career to people we serve--to make it better for those around us.  After forty-two years, it’s time to pass the office to the next generation.  I will miss the courthouse and all the folks there.  It has become my second home.”
