Rain may be this Halloween’s trick

PORT ARTHUR — Little goblins and ghoulies might want to add an umbrella to their Halloween costume Thursday when forecasts of heavy rain have the potential to scare trick-or-treaters into staying home.

For those more inclined to brave what is shaping up to be a frightening forecast for Thursday, there are still Halloween festivities that will be moved indoors in case of inclement weather.

National Weather Service forecasters have predicted 1-2 inches of rain, and up to 5 inches in some areas, from a front moving into the Port Arthur area Wednesday, and continuing Thursday.

Thunderstorms increase in coverage before sunrise Thursday morning, and will be a threat throughout the day, only decreasing Thursday evening, Roger Erickson, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the NWS Lake Charles office.

A few of Thursday’s storms will be severe. Rain could lead to street flooding.

South winds will gust in the 25-35 mph range during the daytime hours Wednesday and Thursday.

Minor coastal flooding is expected near the coast during high tide.

Kent Kuyper, meteorologist with the NWS’ Lake Charles office, urged drivers who must get out in the weather to exercise caution.

“People should take real good care because the kids don’t look where they are going, they are out for candy, so it is up to the driver,” Kuyper said.

Rain is expected to move out of the area late Thursday, with partly sunny to clear skies for the weekend.

Because of the drenching forecast, local and area Halloween events have been changed because of the potential for rainy weather.

The City of Port Arthur’s Trunk R Treat is moving indoors from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31 at the Robert A. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center. This marks the third year of the event.

Last year, more than 1,000 children attended the event. And about 15 are scheduled to be on hand handing out treats.

Jinni Akins, president/CEO of the Nederland Chamber of Commerce, said as of Wednesday afternoon plans were to stay the course, and hope for the best for Nederland’s 9th Annual Trunk R Treat soon.

“It looks like it might clear out, but still be overcast. The heaviest rains have been forecast for 1 to 3 p.m.

Akins said the Chamber plans to make a firm decision by noon Thursday.

If all goes as planned, Nederland’s Ninth Annual Trunk R Treat, is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m., on Boston Avenue, Nederland. For more information, call the Chamber office at 722-0279. More than 20 businesses are expected to attend the event.

Organizers with First United Methodist Church, 502 N. Sixth St., in Orange are also checking the weather. In the event of rain, the Trunk R Treat will be moved to the Praise Center. The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30.

St. Paul Lutheran Church, 5801 W. Jefferson, Groves, will host a Trunk or Treat from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31 at the church. If there is inclement weather the event will be moved to the gym.
