12-year-old hides while home being burglarized, 2 arrested

PORT ARTHUR — A 12-year-old child Port Arthur child who followed instructions of a 911 dispatcher is safe after two men broke into the home during a burglary attempt on Tuesday.

Port Arthur Police received the 911 call at about 1:45 p.m. Aug. 20 from a home in the 5100 block of Minnie Street. The child heard noises near the back of the home and had called police and was told by a dispatcher to lock himself in a bedroom and wait for officers, according to a press release from Port Arthur Police Department.

A few minutes later the child reported that it sounded as if someone had entered the home and was outside the bedroom where he was hiding.

Officers arrived a short time later and observed one suspect looking out of a window and spotted the officers. Two suspects then ran from the home. Officers chased the suspects along a canal bank into a wooded area.

Two police K-9’s and their handlers  responded to the scene and began tracking the suspects. One K-9 and his handler located a suspect hiding under a home. The other K-9 and his handler tracked to a residence and found the other suspect inside. Both suspects were found approximately one-quarter of a mile from the burglary. They were taken into custody and booked into the Jefferson County Correctional Facility for burglary of a habitation.

The suspects, ages 20 and 22, are both from Port Arthur. Their names have not been released.
