Easter comes early to PA's Washington Park

PORT ARTHUR — Kids of all ages had an early Easter party at Booker T. Washington Park on Saturday.

Charlie Alfred, 5, took a spin with a Hula Hoop and Braylen Davis, 4, made bubbles while 15-month-old Royal Sutton played in the grass nearby. The children moved from one activity to another under partly sunny skies. Meanwhile at the park’s pavilion numerous social and civic organizations met with the children and parents next to tables filled with Easter baskets, toy, candy and brand new bicycles.

Ed Sanders Jr., of Men In Sports Teaching Education Representing Southeast Texas, or M.I.S.T.E.R.S, watched as children lined up by age groups for treats.

“When we started (in 2008) we gave out 12 bikes,” Sanders said, his eyes moving toward a group of new bicycles at the other end of the pavilion. “Now we’re giving away 40 bikes.”

Other organizations participating included” Friendship Club, Divas, Ladies of Hearts, Hope Center, Constable Chris Bates and Ebony Misses. The collaboration allowed the groups to prepare for 400 children.

“This year each of the kids who didn’t win will be given an Easter basket,” Sanders said.

Sanders said he would like to see the event grow even larger and include jump houses and more for the children.

“What we really want is for this to grow,” he said. “This is what the group was founded on. Most of us are coaches, baseball, basketball, football. We want to get the kids outside and enjoying themselves.
