PN sidewalk project to benefit students, community

PORT NECHES — Additional sidewalks are currently under construction near two Port Neches schools.

Work began Oct. 2 for the sidewalks near Port Neches Elementary and Port Neches Middle schools. There are already some sidewalks nearest to the schools and the new sidewalks will give students more areas to walk safely.

Amy Gil, principal at Port Neches Elementary is excited about the project.

“TxDOT and the City of Port Neches have been extremely courteous and helping during this time,” Gil said. “With students being dismissed and having to “re-route” kids at times, TxDOT workers have gone above and beyond to make sure our students are safe. We are very grateful for these sidewalks to help keep our students safe.”

Likewise, Port Neches Middle School Principal Kyle Hooper is excited as well.

“PNMS is very excited about the sidewalk project. We are grateful for the city's commitment to upgrade the streets and sidewalks of Port Neches,” Hooper said. “We are grateful for the safety this will provide for our students and all patrons. We appreciate the city council and the mayor for getting this done.”

Port Neches City Manager Andrè Wimer said the construction is a Texas Department of Transportation project which the city applied for and was granted. TxDOT will provide the bulk of the cost and the city will pitch in a matching contribution.

“The federal share of the project is approximately $201,000 and at this point the city’s cost for that amount is approximately $113,000 which includes a portion of construction, engineering and a right-of-way acquisition,” Wimer said.
