Art comes to life at Doornbos Park

NEDERLAND — Families strolled the sidewalks around the pond at Doornbos Park past canopies giving shade to various vendors while groups of people sat back in lawn chairs and at picnic tables at the park on Saturday.

The band Diversion belted out the tunes from a side porch at Nederland Recreation Center providing live entertainment for the first Art in the Park celebration.

Angela Fanette, parks and recreation supervisor and an organizer of the to-be annual event was pleased with the scene.

“We had yoga at 10 a.m. and will have another class later today (Saturday) because people are starting to be interested in it,” Fanette said as she ticked off a list of the numerous activities spread across portions of the 15 acre park. “Diversion is playing now, there are 46 vendors here, two Moon Bounces, Painting with a Twist, snow cones, churros, Mexican waters and more.”

A large sand box was constructed over near the pavilion and filled with both adults and children. Rosie Cabrera had brought along her mother, Hilda Cabrera, her niece Lucy Cabrera and a neighbor’s child Kierra Jackson. Lucy, clad in a bright colored shirt and pants, was just minutes away from participating in a special dance perforce by the Mexican Heritage Society.

“I’ve never been out here before. We moved here recently from Austin,” Cabrera said as she let her gaze moves across the area. “This is really nice.”

Nearby Angela Baker and Jackson took turns adding sand to an ever growing mound that at first seemed shaped like a pyramid.

The two new friends wanted to build up their castle to at least three feet tall, Jackson informed Rosie Cabrera.

Jennifer Guevara, Fernando Guevara, Johnathon Guevara and Robbie Abshire found a special area set aside by organizers for chalk art, each using neon colored chalk to create their masterpieces.

The event was free and open to the public.
