GROVES — Groves Police K9 Rico has died.

The dog, who worked with Deputy Marshal Charles R. Budd, died Jan. 14 and was 11-years-old.

Rico was born in Holland on Aug. 12, 2001 and was imported to Bridgeport, Texas and trained at the Detection K-9 School. He began serving for the Groves Police in April of 2004.

“Rico loved to work and loved to go to schools and special events to see the children. During his service with the Groves Police, Rico worked with Customs and Border Patrol Agents in securing local ports and searching for fugitives. Rico made numerous drug seizures and assisted in apprehending numerous suspects. Rico served on active duty from 2004 to 2009,” Deputy Marshal Charles R. Budd said in an e-mail.

In August of 2009 Rico retired from active duty with his handler, where they both served as reserve Officers until his passing.
