Keep the Peace rally set for Friday

PORT ARTHUR — If one wants to know the reason Shelly McDaniel and others are joining forces for a rally in downtown Port Arthur, look no further than the T-shirts.

“Peace, love and Port Arthur,” reads the shirts, which will be worn by members of the Citywide Ushers board during the Port Arthur Keep the Peace Rally, scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, April 12 at First Sixth Street Baptist Church.

Shelly McDaniel, an organizer, said she hopes the event makes a difference.

“Just as you must start an engine before you can move your car, we need things to motivate, so we can move in the right direction,” McDaniel said. “This is the beginning of lots of outreach programs which start between the churches and law enforcement in the community. I’m excited about what the future holds.”

The peace rally is in response to a set of shootings that occurred more than a week ago that left one man dead, one critically injured and two with gunshot wounds.

The program will include performances from local youth/young adult choirs and praise teams, motivational speaking by many of Port Arthur’s youth ministers as well as guest appearances from several local “super stars.”

McDaniel said she believes it takes a village to raise a child but that many people today take the “hands-off” approach, something she doesn’t feel is effective anymore.

“Trust is the key to making this happen,” she said.
