Procter Baptist celebrates 25 years with the Rev. Rick Erwin

PORT ARTHUR — The Rev. Rick Erwin and his wife, Lynn, have been an active and vital part of the Southeast Texas community for a quarter of a century.  Procter Baptist Church, 4401 Jimmy Johnson Blvd. in Port Arthur, will celebrate the Erwin family with a special service and a luncheon on Sunday, April 7

Rick Erwin has been pastor of Procter Baptist Church since April of 1988. He has more than 30 years of experience as a pastor, Bible teacher and counselor.

Lynn Erwin is active in the ministry of Procter Baptist Church and teaches a ladies Sunday School class and is Librarian at the church. She is also a retired educator and librarian from the Port Arthur Independent School District.

Rick Erwin has also been very active in Southeast Texas during his time at Procter.  He has been a member and former President of the Port Arthur Sertoma Club.  He served on the Board of directors at St. Mary’s Hospital and for the Beaumont Chapter of the American Red Cross.  He is a past president of the board of directors at the Port Arthur Community Home where he continues to serve and be involved. He also currently serves on the board of directors for the American Red Cross of Jefferson County.

Pastor Erwin is a native of Louisiana and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana College. He earned his Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas and his Doctor of Ministry degree from Luther Rice Seminary.

The Erwins have two daughters who live in North Texas where they are active in local Southern Baptist churches. Stephanie is married to Tad Kirkendoll and both teach at Mesquite High School. They have a son, born in July 2008, named Beau. Betsy is a counselor at Eastside Elementary in Jacksonville, Texas.

In the past 25 years, Procter Baptist has been active in state wide and local missions.  The congregation helped to establish a mission church in Alpine, Texas, in the mid-1990s. In more recent years they have teamed with Franklin Graham’s organization, Samaritan’s purse.  

Procter has served as the regional collections site for Operation Christmas Child, the organizations largest annual program.  FLIP (Faith Lives In Practice) ministries was also founded under the direction of Pastor Erwin.  

The church had an opportunity to minister to Bro. Rick and his family in 2010 when he battled cancer and a severe infection which hospitalized him at MD Anderson for over a month. He and Lynn say they consider the church their family, not their work.
