Schooner named Nederland Small Business of Year; Megas family continues to live the American dream

NEDERLAND — The Megas family and The Schooner has long been part of the Mid-County community and on Thursday they received a new recognition — Nederland’s Small Business of the Year.

Constantine and Antonia Megas learned of the surprise award shortly before noon on Thursday when they were called to a back room to meet with the Nederland Chamber of Commerce. Chamber President/CEO Jinni Akins did the introductions.

“They are so involved in the community,” Akins said after the couple were awarded a plaque. “They have been here for 66 years and active in the community. This is a really good family owned business.”

The Schooner, originally owned by Luke Leblanc, opened its doors to the public in 1947. A that time, the menu was somewhat limited to gumbo and beer, according to information from the chamber. In 1950, Eugene Megas purchased the restaurant and expanded the menu to incorporate more local seafood specialties. In 1959, a fire damaged the restaurant and it was forced to temporarily close until it was rebuilt in 1960.

Since 1968, the Schooner has been owned and operated by Constantine Megas, who along with his wife, Antonia, and their children have all worked in the restaurant to help make it a success.

Akins believes The Schooner’s success is due to the hard work and dedication of Constantine Megas and his family. As Greek immigrants, coming to America, Constantine and Antonia are the epitome of the American Dream.

George Megas, a son of Constanting and Antonia, said the family is excited about being named Small Business of the Year.

“This is a third generation restaurant,” Megas said. “We are happy we were recognized by the city and the chamber as small business of the year.”

The Schooner has been the special destination for generations of families for events ranging from birthdays to baptism to banquets and ceremonies, he added.
