Project 3:11 to help the homeless

PORT ARTHUR — A local group inspired by scripture is seeking donations to help the homeless.

Orvie Dombrosky is trying to spread the word about Project 3:11 which refers to Luke 3:11, “He answered and said to them, ‘he who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.’”

Dombrosky and others will collect items to be donated to area homeless from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21 at the Heritage Festival Pavilion on Boston Avenue in Nederland. The group is seeking clothes, jackets, knit hats, socks, shoes, gloves, sleeping bags, blankets, toiletries, toys, individually wrapped snacks, bottled water, sunglasses, mosquito repellent, gallon Ziplock bags and non-perishable food items.

The items will be distributed in the area on Saturday, Dec. 22.

The city of Nederland proclaimed Dec. 21, 2012 as Homeless Recognition Day during a meeting earlier this week.

“We really don’t want recognition for this. We are a group of believers doing this in the love of Christ to help people,” Dombrosky said.

Dombrosky is a member of the Barnabas Society, a non-profit Christian organization committed to serving people of all ages in need.

A fellow member came up with the idea last year in recognition for homeless awareness day and shared the info with cities in the area. Nederland, he said, was the only one who awarded a proclamation.

Through word of mouth, Dombrosky and others have learned where homeless congregate and gather. They plan to reach out to those in need.

“Our goal is to help as many people as we can and otherwise bring awareness to homelessness,” he said. “Many people just walk by and turn their head and  act like nothing is going on. That’s how society is today.”

Dombrosky hopes to make the event more than just a yearly thing, he said adding that he’d like to see it a monthly event.

“Have the whole Golden Triangle giving to others and taking care of individuals,” he said.
