PAPD warns of “pigeon drop” scams

— Port Arthur Police are asking citizens to be aware that “pigeon drop” thefts are on the rise.

During the last several weeks there have been several pigeon drop type thefts or attempts reported, according to a press release from the Port Arthur Police Department.

In these thefts people are approached in parking lots of stores or banks, then asked by the suspect to give them a ride to one of the local businesses. This suspect usually speaks with a heavy accent and claims to be from Nigeria.

A second suspect later approaches them and together they convince the victim to withdraw money from his or her bank, which they later take.

The suspects are described as older male blacks, dressed in slacks, sport coats ties and hats. One of them is approximately 5-foot 2-inches while the other is approximately 6-foot tall. They are possibly in a newer black SUV with one or two other people.

If approached by these people, contact your local police department as soon as possible.
