Healthy Family Fest to feature food, games, prizes and more

PORT ARTHUR — The second annual Healthy Family Festival has a little something for everyone.

The free event, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Robert A. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center, will feature food, games, prizes, face painting, health screenings, health education and more.

“We’ve been planning since Feb. 15, Kay Barclay, executive administrative assistant at the Gulf Coast Health Center Inc., said. “This is an awesome community event. We will have diabetic classes, a game area, Julie Rogers “Gift of Life” Program will bring some games and rented a bouncy house.”

More than 45 vendor booths representing everyone from Wal-Mart Eye Center and the health center to Valero will be on hand.

Barclay said there will be some great prizes offered this year such as an iPad mini and various gift certificates as well as a raffle for a TV.

Visitors to the event will receive a ticket at the door and prizes will be given away every five to 10 minutes, she added.

There will also be hot dogs, chips, popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones as well.

Barclay and organizers are expecting to see upwards of 1,500 people at this year’s event.

“There will be something on stage constantly. We will have the Mexican Heritage Folkloric dancers and Wheatley school’s tiniest titans,” she said.

Port Arthur Police and Fire Department and Acadian Ambulance will also be on hand at the event.

Barclay said the event was made possible by the generous donations from local businesses. Funds raised during the festival allow the center to offset the operating costs of providing services to the uninsured/underinsured patients living in and around the service area.
