Groves resident John Mason Broadway was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the 2012 murder of Cody Hockett, 26.
Broadway, 26, made the plea in Judge John Stevens’ courtroom Friday, according to personnel in the trial division at the Jefferson County Courthouse. The plea was approved by both the victim’s family and defense attorney.
The shooting occurred July 23, 2012 at Broadway’s home in the 3100 block of Cleveland Avenue, according to a story that ran in the July 25, 2012 edition of The Port Arthur News.
Police were alerted to the shooting by a 911 caller who had walked to the home to visit and found the victim, Cody Charles Hockett of Nederland, slumped in the doorway with a gunshot wound. Hockett was conscious and able to speak with officers before being transported by Acadian Ambulance to Christus Hospital-St. Mary in Port Arthur. He died shortly after.
