Mardi Gras revelry is coming early, but instead of tossing beads, krewe members are looking to help make Christmas merry for local families in need.
The Krewe of Krewes, which consists of members from various krewes, is getting together to host Fill-A-Float Toy Drive to benefit the Blue Santa Program and the Southeast Texas Food Bank. The event is set for 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the parking lot of both Port Arthur Walmart locations, 8585 Memorial Blvd. and 4999 Twin City Hwy.
Laura Childress, captain of the Majestic Krewe of Aurora, said the Krewe of Krewes wanted to give back to the community and chose the Blue Santa Program and the Food Bank because both benefit all of Southeast Texas.
“It is a collective effort,” Childress said. “We decided to do both Walmart stores and they went right on board, anything to help kids in the community.”
Childress said they hope to make the toy and food drive an annual event.
Carrie Queen of Krewe de Reine feels the benefit is something the community will get behind and support.
“We’re (krewe’s) are not all about partying,” Queen said. “And we can use the popularity of our organization to help children and the needy.”
Jan Walker, also of the Majestic Krewe of Aurora, said the event also allows the krewes to spend time together.
“While we tend to spend lots of time within our individual Krewes, there just aren't enough opportunities to visit with the other Krewes as well, so we're really looking forward to this event,” Walker said. ‘I expect to see lots of Mardi Gras spirit at Walmart this weekend.”
The Krewe of Krewes is ready to make this holiday season a memorable one for those in need as well as having some fun.
“Come and see us at Walmart, bring us your donations of toys and nonperishable food, and we may just have something for you too,” Walker said. “Who wants to wait until February to break out the Mardi Gras beads? We're ready to pass a good time for a great cause.”
