PORT ARTHUR —
More than 1,300 Mardi Gras revelers packed the Robert A. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center in Port Arthur for the 2nd Annual Beans and Jeans party on Saturday.
Representatives of 12 different krewes tossed beads and danced through the crowds to the beat of the music provided by Electrifying Sounds.
Brenda Fischer, queen mother of Krewe Deuxlusion, loved the event.
“It’s very relaxed and I’ve had the best time,” Fischer said after her turn tossing beads and trinkets. “I enjoy being in the krewe throwing beads, seeing the smiles and laughs and people hollering ‘throw me some beads lady.’”
Festively dressed Ginger McGalin and Kathy Sikes-Young of Krewe de Cameaux stopped by a table at the front of the civic center and grabbed a bowl of red beans and rice. The duo had just arrived and were ready to party.
“We were here last year and had a great time,” McGalin said.
Krewe de bon Appetit, the newest krewe, kicked off the evening with some food. Several men in the krewe, dressed as chef’s, brought out platters of sandwiches while dancing to the beat before dropping down into a split as the crowd erupted in applause.
Janet Vestal of the Krewe of Kut-Ups patiently waited for the Krewes to make it to her area. Vestal is the owner of Janet’s Barber Shop in Groves and Saturday marked her first time to attend the event, she said.
Beans and Jeans was held at the Carl Parker Center on the Lamar State College-Port Arthur campus last year with upwards of 900 in attendance. The event was moved to the civic center this year because the attendance was so high.
This year more than 1,300 tickets were sold, Kirk Gillespie of the Krewe of Cameaux and organizer of the event, said.
The masters of ceremony for the event included James Ware, Dana Melancon and Angel San Juan.
Krewes in attendance included: Krewe de bon Appetit, Krewe Deuxlusion, Krewe Savoir Faire, Krewe de Reine, Krewe of Outcast, Krewe Mon Ami, Krewe Amigo, Krewe of Jesters, Krewe Bone Fete, Krewe de Cameaux, Majestic Krewe of Aurora and Krewe of Kut-Ups
