Nederland man sentenced to 40 years for murder of his mother

BEAUMONT — A Nederland man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of his mother.

Joseph Garrett Arrendondo pleaded guilty to the April 10, 2013 shooting death of his mother, Hollie Arrendondo, 55, of Nederland, in Judge John Stevens court on Monday. He was sentenced to 40 years for the capital murder, Kellie Holmes, court coordinator, said.

Police were first alerted to the domestic disturbance at Hillcrest Apartments, 1516 S. 27th St. in Nederland at 5:09 p.m. April 10, 2013 when the local Spindletop Center (formerly Spindletop MHMR) called Nederland’s dispatch.

Police were initially given the incorrect address by Spindletop, NPD Chief Darrell Bush told The Port Arthur News in a April 12, 2013 story. Dispatch then cross-referenced the names and found the correct address.

The victim was on the phone with Spindletop and was reportedly telling them of a problem when the door to the apartment was kicked in and shots were fired. A total of seven shots were fired in the apartment, six of them striking the victim.

When Nederland Police officers arrived on the scene they discovered a 26-year-old man outside the apartment with a pistol and the back door to the apartment kicked in. Arrendondo was charged with capital murder and bond was set at $2 million.

Arrendondo must serve at least half his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
