Holiday memorial tree to help those grieving

PORT NECHES —  Doug Goad and Craig Melancon know that the Christmas holidays can be tough emotionally for those who have lost a loved one.

In order to help families grieve and honor loved ones Oak Bluff Memorial Park is providing a holiday memorial tree.

The tree is located in the tranquility mausoleum at the cemetery, 101 Block St. in Port Neches.

Goad, vice president of operations and sales, Gennis Group Inc., and Melancon of Melancon’s Funeral Home gathered together earlier this week to discuss the tree and their mission to help others.

“This is something we felt we needed to do,” Goad said.

All area families are invited to bring a special ornament or holiday card dedicated to their loved one and hang it on the tree. Holiday cards will be available in Tranquility Mausoleum for families to fill out and hang on the tree. Clear bulb ornaments will be available with colored pens and paper slips. Mourners and family members can write loved ones’ names and place the special notes inside the bulbs. All items can be picked up at the Oak Bluff office from Jan. 3 through Feb. 1.

“We felt this was something needed for families. The holidays can be tough and a lot of people keep it to themselves,” Goad said.

Melancon said the funeral home will also work to help those grieving by holding a remembrance celebration and create a special ornament as well.

Goad said the holiday memorial tree is available for all to share.

“It doesn’t matter which funeral home or where your loved one is buried,” Goad said. “This is for those who need it.”

For those struggling with grief, Melancon has special pamphlets available for free titled “Thoughts for the Holidays. Funding Permission to Grieve.”
