NFD busy with fires at Taqueria Cotija, home on Hilldale

NEDERLAND — Nederland Fire Department were busy Monday with two major fires.

The fire call came in around 3:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14 at a home in the 100 block of Hilldale Drive. One occupant of the single family dwelling was able to get out of the home and no one was injured, Nederland Fire Chief Gary Collins said.

There was heavy damage to the entire structure and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters responded to a grease fire at about 1:23 p.m. at Taqueria Cotija, 3720 Ave. E. Diners were in the restaurant at the time of the incident and were able to get out safely.

The fire was contained by the restaurants sprinklers and hood extinguishing system and there was moderate damage to the equipment, he said.

The restaurant was closed down to enable staff to clean-up from the fire and reset the sprinkler and hood system.

Taqueria Cotija opened its doors in Nederland in February 2011. The owner, Jose Cardenas, also owns Taqueria Cotija on Gulfway Drive in Port Arthur.
