Groves Knights of Columbus members are gearing up for their annual Food Basket Gumbo to benefit local needy families.
The gumbo meal includes chicken and sausage gumbo, potato salad and dessert for $8 each. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and is take-out or dine-in at the KC Hall, 3749 Lincoln Ave., in Groves.
Leroy Falcon, a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, said the members are working with 320 pounds of chicken quarters, 60 pounds of sausage and 60 pounds of rice.
“We’ve been doing this for almost 40 years,” Falcon said of the Christmastime assistance to the needy. “Last year we took care of 31 families and raised almost $6,000. Every year we do better and better.”
The KC’s started out giving toys back in the 1960s then switched to distributing food by the 70s. Later the trend went toward gift cards so the needy family can purchase necessary items that might not normally be in a gift basket such as baby formula or medication.
David Guarnere, fellow KC, explained all the proceeds go to the needy.
“We’ve been doing this for quite a few years. We have a bunch of members who make this gumbo and serve it to the community,” Guarnere said. “Proceeds go to charity and helping others which is one of our main goals as a Knight of Columbus.”
The KC’s recently helped a number of needy families at Thanksgiving in conjunction with St. Peter’s Catholic Church, he added.
