Rainy, cold weather to stay a while

— The arrival of a strong cold front has caused the cancellation of numerous local holiday events, from parades to street events.

The latest event to be canceled is the Groves Beautification Committee’s annual Lighting of the City Christmas Tree which was originally scheduled for Friday.

“Because of the prediction of inclement weather we flipped the switch and lit Celebration Park tonight (Thursday),” Marty Godwin, member of the GBC, said.

The cold front pushed through the area Thursday night dropping temperatures 30 degrees in three hours.

Donald Jones, meteorologist with the National Weather Service-Lake Charles, said Friday will bring 60 percent chance of showers with cold temperatures and north wind 10 to 15 mph. The high for Friday is expected to be around 47 with a low Friday of 36 degrees.

“It will not be warming up a lot tomorrow (Friday),” Jones said. “This, combined with the light, drizzling rain and winds...”

The cold wet weather will continue through the weekend with rain, cold temps and windy conditions.

The very pronounced frontal boundary caused an odd incident for motorists in the area — a foggy vehicle. Warm, moist air was trapped in vehicles as they crossed the frontal boundary causing the moisture to condense, similar to a glass of water, Jones said.
