City leaders in Groves are looking to the future with the purchase of 1.4 acres of land at Gulf and Washington for future development for a fire station.
Councilmembers approved the $77,000 purchase of land during Monday’s meeting.
Groves City Manager D. E. Sosa said council approved the purchase in the event there is an opportunity for a grant for a fire station or if at some time in the future the city decides to upgrade the fire station.
Groves Fire Chief Dale Jackson, who began his career as a firefighter in Groves about 38 years ago, said he and council had been talking about replacing the fire station for some time. The current building is about 57 years old and outdated.
The city is currently on a strict time frame for the construction of an emergency operations center/police station/municipal court building to be located at Washington and Main, adjacent to the land purchased for the fire station.
In other business, council approved authorizing Mayor Brad Bailey to sign a contract between the City of Groves and GAG Enterprises in the amount of $3.3 million for the construction of the EOC/police station/municipal court. The building is partly funded by a Port Security Grant.
