Jefferson County District Attorney will not seek another term

Maness will resign at the end of the year

BEAUMONT — One of the longest-serving elected officials in Texas will retire from public office at the end of 2013.

Jefferson County Criminal District Attorney Tom Maness announced Tuesday morning that he will not seek an eighth term.

Maness began his career with Jefferson County in 1971. He spent seven years as Chief Felony Prosecutor, eight years as Judge of the County Court at Law, and 27 years as District Attorney.

Maness said in a news release that his tenure with Jefferson County has been a great ride.

"I wouldn't change anything if I had to do it over again," he said. "I have the most talented law office in the state of Texas. They know the law, and have the strength and fortitude to seek what is right and just. They will continue to provide outstanding service and dedication to the people of Jefferson County."
