Former Nederland teacher sentenced to six years

A former Nederland High School teacher was sentenced to six years in prison for  sexual assault of a child and improper relationship between an educator and student on Monday.

Reagan Hawkins, 38, pleaded guilty to the charges in Judge Layne Walker’s 252nd criminal district court. He was sentenced to six years for each of the charges and will serve the sentence concurrently.

Hawkins was formerly employed at the high school and served as a debate team coach. He resigned his position on June 21, 2011.

According to an affidavit for arrest warrant, the mother of the alleged victim told police she was noticing strange behavior between her 16-year-old daughter and Hawkins.

When confronted by her mother, the student admitted she had kissed Hawkins in the past and had sexual intercourse with him on at least three occasions, all while with Hawkins for debate team practice and events. The relationship began in December 2009 when the student was  14, according to the affidavit.

Two other students gave statements to investigators alleging the victim had confided in them about her relationship with her teacher, according to the affidavit.

Hawkins denied any wrongdoing, the affidavit indicated.
