Rainy weather isn’t going to dampen the spirit of Trick or Treat and Fall Festivals.
Potentially heavy rain and strong to severe storms are headed to Southeast Texas beginning Wednesday and continuing into Thursday causing some groups to make last minute changes to their Trick or Treating plans.
Andy Tingler, meteorologist with the National Weather Service-Lake Charles, said rain chances on Wednesday start off fairly low but will increase in the afternoon through sunset with the Houston area getting most of the early rain.
“Rain chances will slowly creep up into Thursday morning, about 50 percent, then an 80 percent by Thursday afternoon,” Tingler said.
Hazards associated with the storm system include strong to severe thunderstorms, rain totals of one to two inches and dangerous lightning.
Temperatures are expected to stay warm until the front moves through the area. Cooler temperatures will arrive by Sunday morning dropping the lows into the upper 40s and low 50s closer to the coast, he added.
A few local and area events have been changed because of the potential for rainy weather.
The City of Port Arthur’s Trunk R Treat will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31 at the Robert A. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center. This marks the third year of the event.
Port Arthur Police Officer Eli Vanhorn said the event will be moved inside the civic center.
The event is well-attended with more than 1,000 children attending last year’s event. And about 15 different groups will be on hand handing out treats.
Jinni Akins, president/CEO of the Nederland Chamber of Commerce is also keeping an eye on the weather and will make a determination about the Nederland’s 9th Annual Trunk R Treat soon.
“We will wait until Thursday morning and gauge the weather. If it’s a 100 percent chance of rain then we will call it and cancel,” Akins said. “As of now, we are still planning to have the event.”
Akins directed the public to the chamber’s Facebook page — www.facebook.com/nederland chamber, saying that updated will be posted. That information also will be posted at www.panews.com, the Port Arthur News’ web site.
Nederland’s Ninth Annual Trunk R Treat, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., on Boston Avenue, Nederland. For more information, call the Chamber office at 722-0279. More than 20 businesses are expected to attend the event.
Organizers with First United Methodist Church, 502 N. Sixth St., in Orange are also checking the weather. In the event of rain, the Trunk R Treat will be moved to the Praise Center. The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30.
St. Paul Lutheran Church, 5801 W. Jefferson, Groves, will host a Trunk or Treat from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31 at the church. If there is inclement weather the event will be moved to the gym.
